The Asphalt Pavement Alliance developed the prestigious Perpetual Pavement Awards to recognizes long-life asphalt pavements across the United States and honor projects that demonstrate outstanding design, construction, and long-term performance.
Although the Perpetual Pavement concept was first introduced in 2000, many asphalt pavements built decades earlier still exemplify its principles. The Perpetual By Performance award recognizes state agencies and other pavement owners whose projects have delivered exceptional long-term performance. Eligible projects must be at least 35 years old, have experienced no structural failure, and maintain an average resurfacing interval of at least 13 years.
Award Winners
Since 2001, the APA's Perpetual Pavement Award program has recognized 228 long-life pavements across 36 U.S. states and one Canadian province. At the time of recognition, these award-winning pavements ranged in age from 34 to 102 years, with an average age of 50.43 years. In 2025, 11 pavements earned the By Performance distinction.
Winning agencies are recognized by their state asphalt pavement association and presented with an engraved crystal obelisk in honor of their achievement.
